LOMACHENKO vs ARMSTRONG

LETTERS

LETTER OF THE WEEK

ON FACEBOOK www.facebook.com/boxingnewsonline

I HAD a wry grin to myself last week when it was suggested by some people that Vasyl Lomachenko is already an all-time great. The people who are making this suggestion are deliberately choosing to forget boxing history. Henry Amstrong, for example, had over 150 wins during a career in which he won world titles at featherweight, lightweight and welterweight.

The problem is twofold. Firstly, there are not many people still around today who saw Armstrong fight, and secondly, present-day society demands instant stardom – we are far too keen to create legends, when legendary status hasn’t been earned. I’m not suggesting for a moment that the 14-fight Lomachenko isn’t a superb boxer, but comparing him to Armstrong? Give me a break!
