AS THE first television sets were sold and the general strike gripped the nation a women’s club opened in Largieside, writes Mark Davey.

It was 1926 and popular topics, at what was known at that time as Largieside Scottish Women’s Rural Institute or the Rural, might have been how to truss a chicken, baking and sing songs.

Since a recent name change the Rural has been rebranded nationally as the Scottish Women’s Institute but the ethos has not changed.
