The perennial problem with presenting dance music in a gig setting is that there is, essentially, nothing to look at.
One solution, as per The Prodigy, is to affect the guise of a traditional rock band. But this is not an approach favoured by Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, who simply jig about behind stacks of arcane hardware while doing inscrutable things to banks of knobs and sliders, which won’t really hold your attention for more than about 90 seconds. Ergo, the intricately devised spectacle that is unleashed around them: art-house visuals relayed on to a gargantuan screen, coruscating lasers, and enough spotlights, LEDs and halogen beams to make the Blackpool Illuminations look more like a dispiriting trip to the lighting section of a particularly shabby department store. Indeed, The Chemical Brothers don’t so much hit the stage as amble on and prepare to board the mothership.
