Even by Robert Forster’s standards, his eighth solo album is sparse. There are just nine songs, and the tambourine on the sleeve is one of the few additional instruments on a record where Forster’s acoustic guitar feels even more prevalent than usual.
That’s not to deny the power in his playing. The opening She’s A Fighter completed recording, when the singer’s wife and co-producer, Karin Bäumler, was diagnosed with cancer. The song’s only lyric is: “She’s a fighter, fighting for good.” Forster jokes that “I’ve out-Ramoned the Ramones” in its simplicity, but there’s a Johnny Cash level of intensity to his delivery, joined by the couple’s children Loretta and Louis on bass and guitar.
