The ostensible reason for this tour is that 2022 marks Roxy’s 50th anniversary, albeit Covid delayed. Indeed its PR photo features the group in their glam days, when they looked like the coolest bunch of aliens to have beamed down to Planet Pop.
But, of course, unlike other groups marking illustrious anniversaries – the Stones and the like – Roxy have barely existed for most of the last 40 years. The group ceased functioning as a recording act with Avalon in 1982 and since then fans have had to content themselves with Bryan Ferry’s often enervating solo records and the occasional band reunion. What perhaps is being celebrated is the half century of Roxy as an idea: the group that introduced postmodernism to pop and became a byword for style and sophistication.
