It’s possible the Thompson Twins could win the award for best logo hands down before we’re even off the starting blocks.
They’d played with the idea in their indie, squat-dwelling era with a suitably anarchic triangle with two Ts in the middle, one upside down, the other upright. It was designed by Tom Bailey – along with their label’s logo Dirty Discs – aprocess he looked back on very fondly when I interviewed him for Classic Pop in 2018.
But when the Twins went into their ultra-pop phase, designer Andie Airfix took a photo of their three heads and haircuts from the front cover of Quick Step & Side Kick, placed them in silhouette and glued them together. And with that, he’d created an iconic logo that was to be used across the two albums that followed and all manner of picture discs and sleeves. The group name wasn’t needed, the logo was the statement.
