“I was feeling desperate, unable to decide/ Between a life of misery or awful suicide,” the mononymous Lawrence sings chirpily on Dismantled King Is Off The Throne, a highlight of 1984’s The Strange Idols Pattern And Other Short Stories, the third of his band Felt’s 10 albums. All 10 are reissued, not for the first time, on CD, now remastered with new artwork and (this time) slipcases. Lawrence, of course, chose neither misery or suicide, instead spending 1979 to 1989 crafting a sound that, despite frequent line-up changes, came to represent one of the era’s English indie archetypes, with his distinctive vocals like a benign Lou Reed and – until 1985, anyway – Maurice Deebank’s winding, glittering lead guitar lines as imaginative as Johnny Marr’s or Tom Verlaine’s.
