You might be surprised to know that top of my vinyl wishlist last year was a new deep -dive boxset from The Alan Parsons Project. Surprised because, despite a few 80s hit singles, this long-running studio project comes very much from the rock world.
The Alan Parsons Project were absolute masters of the concept album, and the arrival of this new 11-LP box – The Complete Albums Collection – proves it beyond doubt. It’s my boxset of the year by far, and spring hasn’t even sprung yet. I haven’t had a sudden change in taste and appetite for rock over pop but it has led me to ask: can pop music do ‘a concept’ as well as rock?
