As Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill recall with their usual wry honesty elsewhere this issue, Street Fighting Years wasn’t exactly the album they’d intended to round off the 80s.
Instead of Trevor Horn reinvigorating their experimental synth-pop roots, the producer behind Frankie Goes To Hollywood and ABC instead turned Simple Minds into stadium folkies. It had mixed results: the band headlined Wembley Stadium for the first time on the resulting tour and Belfast Child gave Simple Minds their only No.1 single.
