Derek D’Souza’s Jam photobook In The Crowd – which has been out of print for almost a decade – has been updated with unseen shots for its anniversary edition.
After submitting photos of The Jam on their short summer tour of 1981 to the band’s fanclub, D’Souza was invited by Paul Weller’s parents Ann and John to shoot the trio formally. Derek eventually caught up with the band on 24 August 1981 at George Martin’s AIR Studios as The Jam worked in Studio 1. D’Souza explains: “Paul already had the location in mind for the photo session – Chiswick House – with the band wearing dark suits to contrast with the natural backgrounds. It was my first photo session – for Britain’s favourite band (and mine).
