Danny Wilson’s second album was released on 17 July 1989
This very magazine could have been named for Danny Wilson: they were on a mission to create classic pop via influences such as Bacharach & David, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Billy Mackenzie, Hall & Oates, Tom Waits and Frank Sinatra. The latter, of course, supplied the name of the band and also their 1987 debut album, courtesy of his 1952 movie Meet Danny Wilson.
The only thing missing was sustained mainstream commercial success. Classic single Mary’s Prayer only made it into the UK Top 40 at its third attempt, eventually reaching an impressive No.3 during April 1988 (it also reached No.23 on the US Hot 100). But how would Danny Wilson follow up such an auspicious debut hit and album? According to chief singer/songwriter Gary Clark, they set their own high standards: “Pressure doesn’t necessarily come from the record label.
