HOW ’BOUT US
CHAMPAIGN
“Some people are made for each other...” sang vocal duo Rena Day and Pauli Carman at the helm of Champaign, a smooth soul band named after their hometown in Illinois.
Champaign were an immediate success, with their debut single How ’Bout Us catching the ear of club DJs everywhere as the ideal track to slow hectic dancefloors down at the end of a set. The song boasted a particularly wholesome harmony on both chorus and backing vocal as well as some understated saxophone and a gentle tone reminiscent of the best early-70s soul groups. In the UK it was championed on specialist radio before it made a swift climb to No.5 in the summer of 1981, spending five weeks in the Top 10 and a quarter of the year on the charts in total. It also got to No.12 in the United States. The album, also called How ’Bout Us, charted at around the same time. Given how dominant the British New Wave was by this time, it proved that the record-buying public were still a sucker for romantic, sentimental ballads with two people addressing each other.
