Forever presumed as one-hit wonders in Britain for Big In Japan, Alphaville have merrily carried on making windy prog-pop in Germany, where there’s presumably more of an audience for dated overblown histrionics. The reissues of their second and third album are wellhandled, each featuring a rarities disc. Sadly, neither album has aged particularly well.
Afternoons In Utopia is a collision between Heaven 17’s sheen and Simple Minds’ bombast and is the worst of both those bands’ excesses, though Dance With Me’s full-speed attack shows just how good Alphaville can be when they find a song worthy of Marian Gold’s unswerving vocal commitment.
