Laurie Anderson didn’t intend O Superman to be a hit and she certainly didn’t capitulate to commercialism on its accompanying album. The influence of her cutting-edge tape loops can be heard in Four Tet, while her affected vocoder pre-dates Autotune by 20 years. However, while it’s to her credit that Anderson’s skewering of Ronald Reagan was an early statement on the US’s cultural influence, there’s a lot of tune-free experiments, too, that Thom Yorke devotees claim represent The Future. They weren’t.
