It won’t escape your attention this issue that we’re positively overflowing with boxsetrelated goodies. Of course, that’s partly due to the fact that Christmas is coming - oh yes it is! - and record labels have finally caught up with a backlog of releases after the industry’s Covid-related hiatus. But it’s also testament to the number of 80s artists with a wealth of great unheard material that has remained hitherto untapped. This unreleased work can often provide an intriguing alternative narrative that changes the face of the accepted story behind the genesis of a classic album.
I’ve only just made my way through Prince’s astonishing Sign O’ The Times box and already we have expanded versions of Tears For Fears’ The Seeds Of Love and New Order’s Power, Corruption & Lies nipping at its purple stack heels.

Step forward New Order, who we join this issue on the cusp of reinventing themselves and emerging from their Joy Division past with the aforementioned Power, Corruption & Lies and its associated singles. As Gillian Gilbert tells us: “Blue Monday didn’t sound like anything else around at all. Which, looking back, was obviously part of its appeal.”
