The ex-drummers of The Cure and Siouxsie And The Banshees, Lol Tolhurst and Budgie’s roles as sometime keyboard players with their former bands proves essential in bringing their joint debut album to life.
More of a dance record than any kind of extended drum solo haven, Los Angeles’ percussion naturally has some of the eccentricities of their old day jobs: Uh-Oh is firmly from The Love Cats’ beatnik world, while Everything And Nothing has the malevolent glint of Juju about it. The trio’s other member, Jacknife Lee is best known as a producer for artists like Snow Patrol and Taylor Swift, but he began as the guitarist for fiery post-punks Compulsion, so he fits in artistically, as well as a production mediator between Tolhurst’s studied playing and Budgie’s more improvisational style.
