One of the all-time great singles compilations, Substance 1987 shouldn’t work: it features the 12” versions of New Order’s previous 11 singles, rather than the casual fan-friendly radio edits. It ends on an early example of a new single specially recorded for a hits album. Most of those are phoned in: New Order, however, dashed off True Faith, still the greatest example of the genre.
