BY GREG REYNOLDS
It’s practical to build a truly complete type set of classic U.S. silver coins, those that date from the 1790s to the 1930s, without spending a vast fortune. Wonderful representatives of all types needed for such a set can be acquired within a half-dozen years or so, most within six months or less. Indeed, coins that most sophisticated collectors and coin connoisseurs would regard as wonderful can be identified and acquired wiThproper advice, patience, and without requiring significant funds to spend. In collecting these type of coins, you can spend as much or as little as you want, keeping in mind that for the most basic set that excludes the earliest coins, you might need to spend upwards of high five figures.
I have been attending and writing about major coin auctions for more than a quarter-century. I have carefully examined the coins in some of the greatest collections of all time. Moreover, I have frequently discussed specific coins wiThgrading experts and wiThleading collectors. I have personally inspected the vast majority of the finest 18Thand 19Thcentury type coins extant.
