A beer budget

Canadians love their beer. So did my grandfather, even though he was American. He always kept two cases in his workshop, under his workbench. One summer in the ‘60s, my grandmother started to monitor his drinking habits. She’d sneak out to the shop daily and open the case to count how many unopened beers were still there.

On an especially hot day that summer, my grandmother decided to have her once-per-season beer. She walked into the workshop and mentioned to my grandfather that she’d come to have a drink with him as she opened the case. Gramma took out a bottle and popped the cap. How strange, she thought. The bottle got capped without it being filled. It happens. And so she popped off another bottle cap. Again, no beer. And then a third bottle, and so forth. She quickly realized that my grandfather was drinking the beer and recapping the empty bottle. He’d known all along that she was checking up on him! Sixty years later, that story has been told over and over to everyone on the beach. It’s one that never gets old.
