Digital Subscriptions > Cottage Life > SPRING 2018 > THEY’RE SO INVASIVE

Aliens. Can’t live with them; can’t keep them from blowing up the White House or bursting out of your chest. Meanwhile, in cottage country, real aliens—invasive alien species such as Asian carp and giant hogweed—are also destructive and gross. And they employ a lot of the same strategies as movie aliens; see Exhibits A through E.—J.D.

A They masquerade as non-aliens, just like in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956, 1978).

Example Brown marmorated stink bugs. They look a lot like native, noninvasive common brown stink bugs. And rough stink bugs. And conifer seed bugs. And a whole bunch of other bugs. Good news for us You can ID them by the white bands on their antennae and legs.
