Dear Cottage Life

We bought our piece of the rock on the Canadian side of Rainy Lake, Ont., in 1988, the year Cottage Life was first published, and we have been enjoying both the magazine and our cottage since.—Craig Hunter, Rainy Lake, Ont. [Hot dang, that makes 2017 our 30th year in publication! See p.76.]

Your Letters

Every time I think my cottaging style is far off from what the magazine seems to cater to, I read a piece like “Lies My Cottage Told Me” (In Like Zim, Fall ‘17), and I feel cherished again. While I have dogs that will retrieve a stick, we rarely bother to throw one. There are chipmunks to glare at, animal tracks (and poopy) to find, and docks to weigh down with naps. I am jealous of Zim’s ability to wear a tube top, but not overly so, since ratty T-shirts are the usual casual attire around our place. There is simply no other apparel suitable for the cottage, unless you consider the evening wear: flannel pyjama bottoms and a cleaner ratty T-shirt. Our cocktail parties involve local bottled brews or wine in plastic tumblers. Thanks for keeping it real, Zim.—Karin Apfel, Red Pine Lake, Ont.

About Cottage Life

Cottage Life’s Winter issue is all about how Canadians do the cold season. Meet a family that embraces the best of winter fun, with polar bear dips, hot tubs, and all-day shinny. Try our weekend meal plans designed for when the water’s off. Get intel from our workshop to help you thrive in the cold: an outhouse seat hack, tips to keep your pipes flowing in winter, a snowmobile spark plug troubleshooting guide, a firewood-cutting primer, and a bookshelf project that gives your old wooden toboggan new life. Plus, we deliver the inside scoop on new appliances for off-grid living. And, it’s the moment we wait for all year, when we get to show you the stunning collection of winning shots from our annual photo contest, along with the funniest pics you sent in. Lastly, Cottage Life turns 30 this year. Celebrate with us as we look back at our fondest (and strangest) moments.
