You captured some amazing moments—6,169 to be exact! Presenting the winners of our 28th annual photo contest
Each year, we receive thousands of entries, and your photos continue to surprise and delight us. Everyone has a camera in their pocket these days, with the ability to automatically adjust to lighting and movement, or combine several photos into one great shot. “My measure of success is asking, ‘Do I wish I took this photo?’ If the answer is yes, you know it’s a strong shot,” says Cottage Life photographer and contest judge Paul Orenstein. We love seeing the unique aspects of cottage and cabin life in your photos, but also the commonalities that bind all cottagers together.

What’s the story?

On a September evening, Ryan McKie was taking a break from fishing on La Cloche Lake, Ont., when he noticed the late-summer sun peeking through the trees. “I took the photo right from where I was standing, cooking dinner over the fire,” he says. “I usually have an eye for a good photo; I snap a lot of pictures, but I can’t believe how well this one turned out.” He knew he had a stellar shot when he showed the photo to his family and friends. “They’re all familiar with the area, but even they didn’t think it was taken on our lake.”

Why is it a winner?

This image captures a magical moment in nature, the kind that every cottager has experienced. The tree at the centre of the photo eliminates a problematic “hot spot” (an area that is more intensely lit than the rest of the image), which allows you to see details: the way the trees are backlit; the light on the leaf in the foreground; the long shadows on the forest floor that converge in the centre, leading you into the shot. The warm sunshine creates an ethereal glow on the landscape— this photo draws you in and keeps you there.
