“Just about anything you can think of, these guys will do or build”, says Gravenhurst, Ont., cotager Laura Carbone, of “the boys”: her husband, Matthew; his twin, Mark; and their two close friends, Marco and Giovanni. “They’re always looking for a project.” Last December’s most photogenic? An igloo. The gang started shovelling on a Friday night at 10 p.m., worked until 6 a.m. the next day, crashed, and were back at it by 1 p.m. They used recycling bins to mould the square blocks at the entrance, found a length of pipe in the garage to use as a chimney, and topped the roof with icicles “to make it feel more like a castle”, says Laura. Add overturned buckets for chairs and a lantern for light, and it was a comfy 10-foot-diameter retreat from the -15°C chill. At least for a litle while, says Laura. “These guys can only sit still for 10 minutes.”—Jackie Davis
