When RCA Victor signed Elvis Presley, it also bought his Sun Records masters. But when Cash departed for Columbia in 1958, Sam Phillips retained the rights to the singer’s Sun masters. So, from Johnny Cash’s brief stay at Sun, Phlllips managed to release seven LPs over the coming years, also including Johnny Cash Sings Hank Williams And Other Favourite Tunes (1960) and All Aboard The Blue Train With Johnny Cash (’62). Coupled with the albums he was by then recording for Columbia – including that long-wished-for Hymns By Johnny Cash of 1959 – he became omnipresent. The Original Sun Sound Of Johnny Cash was released in 1964, six years after he left the label, and still went to No.1. Ker-ching!
