Positioned as an outsider and dismissed by purists, Kane Brown has found his own charttopping, genrebusting formula, and glues it all together with his fabulous voice. Jagged edges and harmonies crunch around his pleading vocals on opening track Baby Come Back To Me, which snakes its way into becoming an earworm.
Game on. Brown tosses in simple, skipping country-pop framed by banjo plucking on Good As You. The oldtimey intro on Lose It swiftly changes up into something more Rhett-like, while fiddles keep it country. It Ain’t You It’s Me has familiar contemplative lyrics about lost love, again transformed by Brown’s voice as he sings of porches, shotguns and ghosts. Short Skirt Weather is perhaps the most generic song here, served up with honky-tonk piano – but there are more cracking tracks just around the corner.
