A new year brings with it reflection on the year that has just ended. As tradition dictates, in the January/February issue we announce the Danza&Danza Prizes awarded by our jury to artists, projects, events and personalities that have stood out over the last twelve months.
The cover features Claudio Coviello Principal dancer of La Scala Theatre and winner of an Award for the second time. An extraordinarily sensitive and musical performer, Coviello tells us about his nine years at La Scala, his favourite roles and his future projects. Also in this issue we find out about two more extraordinary dancers and the cool couple of Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet: the Principal Denis Rodkin and the promising Eleonora Sevenard, who will perform as guests at the Gala Les étoiles that will take place in Rome in January.
Our ‘Director Reflects’ column features Altynai Asylmuratova. The étoile presents her Astana Opera Ballet Company, an ensemble that is constantly growing and is gaining increasing recognition on Western stages. The issue would not be complete without the world dance legend that is Alicia Alonso: we trace her story and achievements in an in-depth analysis compiled by Francesca Pedroni and Silvia Poletti. We also delve into the crafts of dance, focussing on music with Italian composer Vincenzo Lamagna who has been part of Akram Khan’s trusted team for a few years now. We touch on the main European debuts starting with Ratmansky’s reconstructed Giselle at the Bolshoi and the addition of Iphigenie auf Tauris to the Semperoper Dresden repertoire, as well as John Neumeier’s international creation inspired by Tennessee Williams, the Festival de Danse Cannes, Jiri Bubenicek’s new Cinderella produced in Italy and the opening of the La Scala Theatre dance season with Manuel Legris’ Sylvia, D&D Prize winner for Best Ballet Production staged in Italy.
