DANZA&DANZA International  |  Sept/Oct
We dedicate this issue to the Bolshoi Ballet. The Muscovite company has performed so rarely in Italy that we have never before had the chance to fully discuss what has been deemed most sought-after ballet company in the world since the early 2000s. Absent from the Milanese scene for eleven years, the Bolshoi Ballet only graced the stage of La Scala Theatre twice prior to that. In 2007 the company returned to Milan, but this time appeared at the Teatro degli Arcimboldi due to restoration of La Scala’s historical site. The two titles chosen for this tour embody the tradition and the modernity of the company: "La Bayadère" in the new staging by Yuri Grigorovich from Marius Petipa and "The Taming of the Shrew" (2014), the first ballet created by Jean-Christophe Maillot for a company other than his own Ballets de Monte-Carlo. It is also worth remembering that the occasion marks the return of Makhar Vaziev to La Scala, where he was Director of the Ballet Company for seven years, up to 2016. In the interview you will find in the issue, the Director makes it clear he still has as lot of affection for our theatre and the company’s dancers. To round up our "Bolshoi in Italy" special we interview the dance couple Anna Tikhomirova and Artem Ovcharenko.
However, the fact that the Bolshoi Ballet is finally back in Italy in no way overshadows the rich calendar of events lined up in the coming months for dance audiences across Italy and throughout the world. From the autumn festivals to the new seasons of the biggest theatres, we give you the low-down on the must-see events. We’ve dedicated our cover story to Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, an author whose creative steak seems to know no bounds and has been offered numerous commissions from across Europe, from the company of the Goteborg Opera to the Royal Ballet in London.
