My parents moved from Iran to California in the 1970s. For my mom, an important way to immerse me and my brothers in our culture was through food. She would drive all over southern California for just the right ingredients to make the most delicious Persian dishes. When I was in kindergarten, kids made fun of me because my food looked different. I pondered being upset but then thought, “No, this tastes too good!”
