DIESEL COMPASS

I own a 1998 Chevy 6.5L diesel crew cab. I love the truck, but it appears it may have a head gasket leak or a cracked head. I’m not sure what to do. Furthermore, I’m having a hard time finding someone to fix her. Can you point me in the right direction?

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your 6.5. Here’s what we would do. The first step is to pull the heads to learn what is causing the problem— whether it’s due to bad gaskets or cracked heads. Most problems that result in compression pressure leaking into the cooling system is due to a failed head gasket, but you won’t know that till the heads are off. Don’t spend any money or make an expensive commitment until you know what the problem is.

Most decent gas engine mechanics will do a good job when replacing a head gasket(s) on your truck’s engine. The GM service manual has the procedure laid out, but we would specify that you ask for (insist on) new Fel-Pro TTY (Torque to Yield) head bolts and Fel-Pro head gaskets. Correctly prepping the head decks and blocks decks is important as well, but again, any decent mechanic will know that. Let us know if he runs into anything unusual after inspecting the heads and block.
