Wild Thing

INTERVIEW CARRIE LYELL, WORDS ROXY BOURDILLON

Pip Brown, better known as Ladyhawke, finds having a stage name helps her performance. “I’ve always really liked having almost a split personality. I’ve got the excuse to get up onstage and perform.” There’s a downside to such a distinctive alter ego, though. “No-one knows what Pip’s like. I’m really cool, I swear!” From her refreshing honesty and friendly demeanour, that’s clearly true.

The singer-songwriter burst onto the music scene back in 2008 with her self-titled debut. Catchy singles like My Delirium and Paris Is Burning ensured its success. Her second album, Anxiety, came out in 2012. Since then, Ladyhawke fans have been eagerly awaiting her next release. Thankfully, they won’t have to wait much longer. Ladyhawke’s third offering, Wild Things, goes on sale this month.

Pip explains her hiatus. “I needed a little break for a while. I was so burnt out.” Her sudden rise to fame and the pressures that came with it left her feeling “really jaded”. At the same time that her record sales soared, so did Twitter’s popularity. “It was like the birth of trolls. Of course, I didn’t pay attention to the one thousand lovely bits of feedback I got. It would be the one bad one that I would focus on forever. ‘Ladyhawke, I hope you die.’ Things like that.” Pip doesn’t hold back about her “real hatred” for social media. “It’s a platform for people to just say whatever the fuck they want and not give a shit about your feelings. It used to be that if someone had something bad to say they’d have to say it to your face. They’d have to pluck up the courage to walk up to you. It’s really spineless.”
