It’s Valentine’s Day 2014 and Ellen Page is onstage at the Human Rights Campaign conference in Las Vegas. She’s wearing black skinny jeans and a t-shirt with “All love” printed on it. She looks a little anxious – she will later go on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show and admit that this is the most nervous she’s ever been in her entire life and that she’s terriied she’s about to have a panic attack. Nevertheless, she remains resolute. She takes a deep breath. There is a tremble in her voice as she tells the audience, and the whole world, “I am here today, because I am gay.”
A heartfelt cheer goes up. Spectators rise to their feet. For almost a full minute, Ellen can’t get another word out. The applause is too deafening, the moment too monumental. This simple yet profound revelation is a love letter to our community and, even more so, to herself. Until now, she has kept her sexuality secret, being careful not to touch other women too much in public and asking girlfriends to leave buildings by different exits. But with that single sentence, she is liberated. It’s a risky move, but one that ultimately pays off, paving the way for countless other LGBTQI people to live more freely. As I watch the clip for the irst time on my laptop at home, I become aware of the tears pricking my eyes. I know for certain I will never forget how huge this feels, to see a gay woman, a Hollywood star I’ve grown up watching, standing so boldly and beautifully in her truth.
