YOUNG, GIFTED AND QUEER

Yanni Burton is a classically trained Aussie pop musician based in New York. He calls John Legend and Rufus Wainwright friends, and he’s ready to launch his brand of “glam-chill pop” on the world.

DNA: You’re trained in classical music but now you’re tinkering with pop. Have you always been a closet pop fan?

Yanni: Absolutely, one-hundred percent! [Laughs] The first album I ever owned was Aqua. I’m pretty sure that album had a significant impact on [pauses] many aspects of my life!

Growing up, who inspired you?

Gosh. My mum, who, in all honesty, was, and still is, my biggest inspiration. I was also obsessed with Pink, Destiny’s Child, Britney and Natalie Imbruglia. Fierce female musicians.
