It’s still binge season with more great gay shows to enjoy, including two from Ryan Murphy.
WITH IAN HORNER
HOLLYWOOD Season 1
Hollywood.
(Netflix/Ryan Murphy Productions) Old Hollywood through new eyes. This is an elegant, stylish, camp, engaging vision of the “dream factory” with the top layer peeled away to reveal what we all know, or suspected, really went on.
The story echoes Scotty Bowers’ juicy memoir about how he serviced more than just cars at a not-so-secret petrol station. Jack (David Corenswet) is a struggling “background actor” who earns extra bucks as long as he’s prepared to pump more than gas. Some of his regulars include the most powerful names in town. A fictional Rock Hudson (Jake Picking) and Cole Porter also stop by.
Murphy shows the abuse of power based on race, gender and sexuality… which still goes on.
There’s a whole lot of façade – a “writer” servicing an “actor” who puts him in touch with a “casting agent” – though none are actually filmmaking at this point. How did anyone ever make it in this town?
Murphy’s team have injected a lot of wry detail into the production design, like the “Lubrication Service” sign at the gas station.
Without compromising on the glitz, glamour and sexual tension, Murphy also shows the ugliness of the abuse of power and the discrimination based on race, gender and sexuality, which continued way beyond the Golden Years of Hollywood, and still goes on.
