The Face of Evil

It’s a cautionary tale of fixing a computer when you don’t know what you’re doing, but was it a good choice for a BBC repeat over Christmas?

BBC Four wanted a Doctor Who that had originally aired around Christmas for an unusual festive repeat. The Face of Evil launched the second half of Tom Baker’s third series on 1 January 1977, but it doesn’t have a particularly celebratory tone. The channel’s ultimate choice brings to mind The Watcher’s Guide to Christmas, a light-hearted trawl through Christmas past in 2011’s seasonal issue of DWM. The Barnet bypass bystander awarded The Face of Evil only two Christmas puddings out of five; judging the Doctor Who of Christmas 1976 and New Year 1977 only marginally more festive than The Krotons – another story that just happened to find itself schedule around the holidays. Nevertheless, The Face of Evil wasn’t a bad selection…
