Back in DWM 347, published in 2004, we presented an interview with the First Doctor, William Hartnell. Of course, Hartnell was the only Doctor that DWM never spoke to, as the actor sadly died at the age of 67 in 1975 – more than four years before the first issue of the magazine was published. However, this rare and treasured interview with the original Doctor came courtesy of Lynn Young, who – in 1965 at the age of 11 – had written to Hartnell, requesting an interview with him for her school project. Hartnell subsequently wrote Lynn a reply, inviting her to send him a list of questions, promising that he would do his best to answer them.
A few months later, on 31 July 1965, having completed two series’ worth of Doctor Who, William Hartnell put pen to paper, carefully replying to each of Lynn’s nine questions.
