As part of the celebrations for its 500th issue, Doctor Who Magazine hosted its first convention. A brisk panel brought together some of the magazine’s leading writers and editors.
Doctor Who Magazine’s birthday cake was specially baked for the event by Mandy Cass.

On Saturday 28 May 2016 the staff and many of the freelancers from Doctor Who Magazine visited the Copthorne Hotel in Windsor for a celebratory convention. Established as Doctor Who Weekly in 1979, before becoming Doctor Who Monthly and ultimately Doctor Who Magazine, the publication had just notched up its 500th issue. Which was a good excuse for a party in the shape of an informal event for several hundred fans.

Celebrities like former producer Philip Hinchcliffe and actors Dan Starkey and Sophie Aldred took top billing, but the afternoon also included a brief panel discussing the history of the magazine and what went into putting each issue together. On stage were Alan Barnes (writer and former editor), Benjamin Cook (writer), Marcus Hearn (writer and Special Editions editor), Dez Skinn (founding editor), Tom Spilsbury (editor) and Peter Ware (deputy editor). Here are some of the highlights of that lively conversation…
