The Return of Doctor Mysterio

At last, on Christmas Day 2016, Doctor Who returned to BBC One with a brand new episode. But was the Special as super as its heroes…?

The latest Doctor Who episodes and products reviewed by our team!

BROADCAST Sunday 25 December 2016

It could easily go without saying but it shouldn’t. So I’m saying this right at the top: what a bloody marvellous Doctor Peter Capaldi is. He’s the silvery icing on the Christmas cake that makes this Special so special. I’ve liked him as the Doctor from the moment his name was announced live on BBC One back in 2013 and he just gets better and better. It would be an insult to suggest that an actor of his ability and stature has grown in confidence in the role, but certainly over three years his Doctor has become more confident in himself. Any self-doubt (all that “Am I a good man?” angst) is far in the past. Any dourness is a smokescreen with a fire and impish energy beaming through those twinkly eyes. Whatever note he has to play – joy, sorrow, vagueness, intensity, peering goofily around corners, facing down bad guys, gambolling about like a crackpot prof with a lashed-up contraption on a rooftop – Capaldi is bang on the money.
