A History of Doctor Who in 100 Objects…#82

Readers with long hair and short toenails may recall that last month we mentioned in passing a remarkable work of literature which was unleashed upon an unsuspecting public back in 1985. The brainchild of Gary Downie, sometime production manager and ubiquitous socialite at the heart of the dazzling showbiz whirl of 80s Doctor Who, it is a book which has weathered three decades of critical scrutiny and survived to tell the tale. A descendant of sorts was published last year, but that’s for another time. This month, let us roll the decades back and ponder the wonder that is the original Doctor Who Cookbook.

The format is inspired. From his privileged position at the heart of Doctor Who’s inner circle, the estimable Mr Downie solicited recipes from the great and the good, and set them down for the gastronomic delectation of fine diners the world over. The roll of honour is nothing if not impressive: besides a host of Doctors, companions, writers and directors, there are contributions from the likes of Beryl Reid, Ingrid Pitt, Martin Jarvis, Faith Brown, George Baker, Maurice Denham… the list goes on. And on. And on.
