THE XIII Chromosome

The casting of Jodie Whittaker was one of the boldest decisions in the long history of Doctor Who. Now that the dust has settled on the unprecedented publicity, we ask some of the show’s luminaries to speculate on the futurea
The new Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, as she was revealed to the world on 16 July.

The Thirteenth Doctor is already here. On Wednesday 19 July, Jodie Whittaker recorded her Doctor Who début, to be seen at the end of this year’s Christmas Special. What she says, what she does, is a closely guarded secret, but the notion of casting a woman as the time traveller from Gallifrey is no longer an abstraction conjured up by thinkpiece writers. It’s real. It’s happening. It has happened.

19 July also marked 13 years and one day since shooting on Doctor Who resumed in the UK. If only they’d called Whittaker in on the Tuesday, it would have made it dead-on 13. The Thirteenth Doctor, 13 years; numbers aligning neatly. Except… that extra day. In itself it feels indicative of her casting, which comes as a profound but exciting disruption in the programme’s 54-year history.
