Ben Zen

Back in 1997, in a previously unpublished interview, the late Michael Craze reflected on his time spent as Able Seaman Ben Jackson – who travelled the universe with the first two Doctors and his beloved ‘duchess’, Polly.
Sailor Ben was seen ashore in The War Machines.

It was 20 years ago today… Michael Craze was the first person I ever interviewed for Doctor Who Magazine. On Saturday 18 October 1997, less than 14 months before his death at the tragically young age of 56, we sat in the beer garden of the Grey Horse pub in Sunbury-on-Thames – Michael nursing a pint, me a cola – and I quizzed him on how he came to be cast as Ben Jackson in Doctor Who.

“They wanted a complete change. It was a completely different conception, the way that Polly and Ben behaved with the Doctor”, Michael said of the swingin’ new TARDIS crew. “The times were a-changing, because it was 1966, and I think what they thought was that they’d have an Alfie-type character; a Mike Caine-type character. They also wanted the kind of epitome of the dolly bird that Anneke [Wills] was. They wanted to move with the times. I think it was good that it was brought into the modern age.”

Only a few snippets of our hour-long chat made it to print back then, in DWM 275. So we’ve dug out the original tapes, to present some extracts that have never been published anywhere before. Until now…
