Doctors’ First Episodes

“Where am I? Who am I? And who are you?” The Time Team – with a fresh, 2018 intake – meets three brand-new Doctors…

Starting is hard. First impressions stick. A Doctor’s debut episode has to say: ‘Hey, I’m the Doctor. You’re gonna like me.’ It has to say: ‘Here’s what I’m about. Don’t be afraid.’ It has to promise us the trip of a lifetime. ‘Do you wanna come with me?’ A lot’s riding on first episodes.

Ask Christel, Jake, Kezia, Luke and Miles – five of Doctor Who Magazine’s newest recruits. Fresh faces. Same name: the Time Team. Always the Time Team. (The title seems to be passed down.) They’re about to watch three Doctors’ very first episodes. But where to begin?

Face down on a bed of heather in a forest near Epping? No Wi-Fi.

On the disco planet Lakertya? Plenty of Wi-Fi, but quite death-y.

In a windowless basement at the western end of Oxford Street? Bit dingy.

So we plump for a well-lit living room instead, in Lambeth, South London. A framed Dalek poster looks down from the wall above a comfy red sofa. Nine-inch TARDISes bookend the TV. Doctor Who books, DVDs, and figurines, all sorts of ephemera, line the shelves.

“Can we sing along to the theme tune?” asks Jake, cueing up today’s first episode – 2005’s Rose, the Ninth Doctor’s smash-hit inaugural adventure.

“It feels like we’re on Gogglebox,” beams Christel. “Can we swear?” [NoEd.]

Before the Team’s post-regeneration madness takes hold – memory loss, erratic behaviour, bad manners, terrible dress sense (nope, too late) – Luke hits play…
