The Fourth Doctor’s Scarf

It’s the Doctor’s most recognisable accessory, the show’s defining item of clothing. But how best to get a scarf of your own?

The Oncoming Storm’, ‘The Beast of Trenzalore’, ‘The Butcher of Skull Moon’ or even, sometimes, ‘John’… the Doctor is known by many names on many different worlds. But for the past 43 years, our favourite alien has been known by the public and especially the press as a scarf-wearing Time Lord. In fact some journalists and members of the public seem to think that the Doctor has always worn a long, striped scarf.

This is an image so firmly embedded in the minds of the audience that it can’t be erased by time or cricket whites. Six years before producer John Nathan-Turner began his crusade to introduce distinctive, easily identifiable uniforms for the Doctor and his companions, his predecessor Barry Letts and costume designer James Acheson had already cracked it. Almost by accident, they created a totem of British popular culture – a woollen icon of teatime telly.
