Doctor Who Magazine’s TARDIS tin contains 120 tantalising, taxing and trivial questions. Each interviewee must answer a random selection…
Lisa Bowerman prepares to take her first question from the TARDIS tin.

Earlier this year Lisa Bowerman was part of the ‘Gallifrey Waits No More’ panel at the Gallifrey One convention in Los Angeles. One of the main topics of conversation was the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. “They were saying, ‘Oh, we don’t have any strong female characters,’” Lisa recalls, “and I tentatively put my hand up and said, ‘Actually, I’ve been playing one for 20 years.’” Two decades ago, Lisa made her debut as time-travelling archaeologist Professor Bernice Summerfield on audio for Big Finish. “Benny is the continuously longest running companion who’s never been on television,” says Lisa, laughing. “She was created by Paul Cornell in 1992 as a companion for the Seventh Doctor in Virgin’s New Adventures novels after Doctor Who finished on TV in 1989. When the TV Movie came out Virgin lost the rights to do Doctor Who novels – that had gone back to the BBC – but they kept Bernice Summerfield as a solo entity because she’d been so successful.”

In 1998 Big Finish decided to produce professional CD audio dramas starring the character.
