The First Doctor

“What are you young people doing inside my TARDIS?” The Time Team’s got a ticket to ride with three Number Ones. It’s the fabulous First Doctor!

Beth, Jake, Dan, Claudia and Christel get ready to watch the First Doctor in action.

We all change, when you think about it. Take the Time Team. It all started out as a mild curiosity in a living room in Lambeth, South London, and now it’s turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure, don’t you think?

“You’re in for a treat,” grins First Doctor fan Kez, as Beth, Christel, Claudia, Dan and Jake settle down on her sofa once more. “This era of Who is just brilliant.” So brilliant that Kez might join her fellow Time Teamers on the sofa to watch one of today’s two 1960s offerings.

But we’re kicking off with something a little more recent…

A long time ago, at the South Pole, the Doctor is refusing to… etc, etc. You know how it goes. It was only on last Christmas. “You may be a Doctor, but I am the Doctor. The original, you might say.” From 1980s Antarctica, to the weapon forges of Villengard, to the Western Front, it’s one final fling for the First and Twelfth Doctors.

CHRISTEL: “I can’t fault David Bradley’s performance.

He’s an incredible First Doctor –”

JAKE: “He’s brilliant.”

CHRISTEL: “– but it’s surprising how little he has to do in this.”

BETH: “He pours out the brandy. That’s all you need.”

CHRISTEL: “One and Twelve don’t feel very equal, though. The Twelfth Doctor definitely seems a lot cleverer.”

CLAUDIA: “Well, he’s older. And One seems kinder. More human. When they’re dealing with the Captain, Twelve’s quite rude, but One’s like, ‘You’re in shock. Let me help you.’” “Older gentlemen, like women, can be put to use,” clarifies One. Twelve’s horrified: “You can’t say things like that!” But there’s no stopping him (DAN: “Oh no, grandad’s off again”): “This whole place,” persists One, inspecting Twelve’s TARDIS, “could do with a good dusting. Obviously Polly isn’t around anymore.”

The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) meets his earliest incarnation (David Bradley) in Twice Upon a Time (2017).
