The Day of the Doctor

The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) in The Woman Who Fell to Earth.

After months of speculation the titles of Jodie Whittaker’s first two episodes – and the dates they will be broadcast – have been revealed.

Series 11 opens with the hour-long episode The Woman Who Fell to Earth, which will air on BBC One on Sunday 7 October. Episode two – The Ghost Monument – will follow on Sunday the 14th. The series will run for ten weeks and will be simulcast in the USA on BBC America, with each episode available on BBC iPlayer in the UK immediately after transmission.

Although Saturday has been the traditional day of broadcast for Doctor Who since it began in the 1960s, this is not the first time the series has been scheduled on a Sunday. In 2009, Tenth Doctor Special The Waters of Mars was first broadcast on Sunday 15 November. And since 2005, three Christmas Specials have also debuted on Sundays: 2005’s The Christmas Invasion, 2011’s The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe and, most recently, 2016’s The Return of Doctor Mysterio. Showrunner Chris Chibnall explains the thinking behind the series’ new slot in his Production Notes column on page six.
