The Doctor and her friends return to present-day Sheffield, where Ryan isn’t the only one with unfinished business…

Tuesday 1 January 2019

Christmas Day without Doctor Who? Why, it’s as unthinkable as the festive season without Black Friday punch-ups, disappointing winter wonderlands and the Coca-Cola Truck.

Or is it? Because, for all the speed with which the show established itself as a modern festive tradition, it’s a slot that favours a certain type of whimsical, snow-frosted storytelling that, 13 Christmases after Prime Minister Harriet Jones’ spectacular fall from grace, was perhaps in danger of looking a little tired itself.

And that’s why, hot on the heels of the successful switch from Saturdays to Sundays, bumping this year’s seasonal outing to New Year’s Day feels like another timely shot in the arm; one that allows Chris Chibnall to throw back the curtains and shed daylight on the format, replacing the midwinter fireside fairy tales of recent years with a surprisingly muscular – and entirely unexpected – action-horror movie spectacular. In other words: New Year, new Who.
