With a new companion to introduce and an ongoing storyline to develop, The Syndicate Master Plan required a little more behind-the-scenes collaboration than previous series of The Fourth Doctor Adventures.

“It must have been the middle of 2015 that we discussed roughly what the overall plan was, and the fact that there was a big evil syndicate working against people,” recalls script editor John Dorney. “We decided precisely who they were quite early on. But the precise make-up of the stories wasn’t officially decided on until we actually had to write the individual storylines.”

Writer Guy Adams came up with a plot to span two stories, closing Volume 1 with The False Guardian and opening Volume 2 with Time’s Assassin. “I like the idea that we’re all playing into one bigger story, as well as having the freedom to do our own thing,” says Guy. “There’s a real pleasure in that. Because my background for so long was novels, and creating in isolation, one of the main things I enjoy is perhaps what some novelists would hate: the collaborative aspect of it. To be able to be part of a jigsaw… I find that creatively really exciting, really interesting, and just great fun to do.”
