What challenges did Andrew Ireland overcome to make the new Mission to the Unknown?
Producer and director Andrew Ireland.

A few days after the UCLan remount of Mission to the Unknown wrapped, Doctor Who Magazine caught up with a refreshed Andrew Ireland. First, we have to clear something up: apparently this was all our fault?

Andrew is happy to explain. “The germ of the Mission to the Unknown idea was my PHD [at Bournemouth University in 2012], which was creating a simulation of a 1960s production environment and re-enacting the process of making TV. We remade the first half of [the 2006 story] Tooth and Claw, which is roughly a 25-minute episode in old money, if you like. I then wrote a proposal for Mission to the Unknown in about 2013 and brought it with me to UCLan, but it was just an idea and I didn’t pursue it at the time. Last summer I was asked if I would do an interview about my PHD for the DWM Special Edition, In the Studio. After that I thought, ‘Well, why not…?’” As ever with Doctor Who, it wasn’t quite as simple as it sounds. “I had to get permission from the BBC and the Terry Nation estate,” says Andrew.
