The Paternoster Gang has felt like a Big Finish spin-off waiting to happen for the best part of a decade. It took a while to unpick the rights, with the result that, as much by accident as design, it has moved seamlessly into the ‘Victorian investigations’ slot recently vacated by the redoubtable Jago & Litefoot. The set-up is as elegantly simple as it is stark staring mad: from their address in London’s fashionable Paternoster Row, a lizard woman from the dawn of time, her human wife and their potatofaced alien butler investigate outbreaks of the (to quote one local) “bloomin’ uncanny” across the capital, more often than not saving the planet in the process.

And if you think that sounds batty, then the elevator pitch for their first audio adventure, The Cars That Ate London, is basically ‘steampunk Transformers’, in which driverless electric carriages rise up and start eating the local populace. True story.
