When Big Finish launched its series of Doctor Who audio adventures with The Sirens of Time back in 1999, the more cynical fans could have been forgiven for thinking that they’d seen it all before.

From the 1996 TV movie to Virgin Books’ New Adventures to someone getting his car painted with an announcement that he was ‘The New Doctor Who’, there was no shortage of interested parties queueing up for the chance to make their own version of the programme while the BBC wasn’t. Some of those cynical fans probably had the odd bash at writing fan fiction. Some of the above were better received than others, but even so, nobody really expected any of them to endure in the way that Doctor Who itself had.
